In the 1800′s Master Mariner Charles Stephen Bascand captained the steamer “SS Waipara” around New Zealand, before purchasing land and settling with his family in the South Island. Bascand Estate was established in 1998 and the descendants of Charles Bascand now own vineyards in the outstanding grape growing regions of Marlborough and Waipara, producing premium wines under the Bascand label.
From its Marlborough estate, Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, Pinot Gris and Pinot Noir grapes are grown, while from its North Canterbury estate in Waipara, outstanding Riesling and Pinot Noir grapes are grown.
Bascand wines are crafted by winemaker Scott Berry who has won numerous medals and awards for his wines the
most recent being the only Bragato gold presented for a Riesling in 2007.
“Premium quality is our guiding force” says Scott. “Selecting grapes from regions most suited to their individual qualities
gives me the ability to craft outstanding wines for people to enjoy.”
