Hollick Wines is a small family owned winery in Coonawarra, in South Eastern South Australia. Ian and Wendy Hollick purchased a piece of grazing land on the southern end of the Coonawarra district in 1974. This small block of land was one of the original allocations in the Coonawarra Fruit Colony which John Riddoch founded in 1890. It was never developed as a fruit block but instead was the site of a tannery, and later a dairy.   Since 1975 the Hollicks have progressively planted Cabernet Sauvignon,...

With degrees in horticulture from the University of Bath, Steve Pellett and Bridget Ennals set off, in true intrepid explorer mode, to travel through Africa then back to the UK to work as fruit technologists. But it was another two years before they found the place where they wanted to put down their roots: and that place was at the top of New Zealand’s South Island, under the cool gaze of Mount Tapuae-O-Uenuku (the footprint of the rainbow) in Marlborough’s spectacular Awatere Valley near Blenheim.  They signed up early to the NZ Sustainable...

This family owned boutique winery is set right on the banks of the Murray River at Trentham Cliffs just outside Mildura. The Murphy family arrived in Australia in 1909 from Ireland and so are numbered among the Irish ‘Winegeese’ who, from the 18 century onwards, engaged in the wine trade in the countries of their adoption and were instrumental in the viticultural development of some of the finest wine-growing areas of the world. Today the many and illustrious wines and labels of the Winegeese have become synonymous with quality on the international market. The...

Christa and Rolf form the heart of Rolf Binder wines, continuing a family wine-making tradition that spans nearly 60 years. Their parents arrived in Australia in 1950 - just 2 amongst the many post-war immigrants from Europe and met a grape grower in the Barossa while working to help pay for their assisted passage. From such unlikely beginnings, a passion for the Barossa was born, a winery was purchased and a new life began. They soon came to appreciate the riches of the Barossa - the old vine Shiraz, Mataro and Grenache and were at the forefront of many...

Englishman Henry Pike emigrated to South Australia in 1878 and established a family brewing business. His great grandson Edgar followed in his footsteps and established a wine business. Edgar's sons Neil (winemaker) and Andrew (viticulturist) now run Pikes Wines (established in 1984) which is situated in the verdant Polish Hill River sub-region of the Clare Valley. This estate is renowned for its Clare Valley Riesling with the iconic Pike fish label. Noon Winery is a small, family-owned winery, producing earth-shattering red wines! Drew and his wife Raegan - gentle, considered people - took over the family winery in 1996. Their quiet respect for the land they nurture and the vines they tend, is reflected in their wine-making style - gloriously powerful wines with minimal processing. The property has 4.2ha of estate-grown bush vine Grenache vineyards planted in 1934 (the Home Block) and 1943 (BJ’s Block), with plantings in 1999 of a further 1.5ha, mostly Graciano. The Shiraz and Cabernet vineyards are growerowned by friends, the Borrett Family, in Langhorne Creek - tiny vineyards planted in...

Matilda Plains winery and wines were named after the Willson family border collie dog, Matilda. The dog had the canny knack of knowing when the sugar level was rising in the grapes and on her morning walks would sample the fruit. When she stopped spitting out the grapes, the vineyard staff knew it was time to start collecting samples. The high tech winery (complete with temperature controlled barrel shed) was completed in 2002, on the plains between Langhorne Creek and the shores of Australia's largest freshwater lake, Lake Alexandrina. This pair of wines is made from the Willson family vineyards at Langhorne Creek where...

Coonawarra - in the cool South East corner of South Australia - is recognised and admired worldwide as a leading area for the production of premium quality wines. Ian Hollick recognised its potential with his first purchase of prime terra rossa land in 1974; now with over 200 acres, the property comprises 3 core vineyards: the original Neilson’s Block, Wilgha vineyard and more recently Red Ridge in Wrattonbully. Driven by quality and a hands-on approach, the wines offer exemplary fruit, great balance and consistency of style. From the early...
