Thandi
Thandi - a Xhosa word meaning 'nurturing love' - is a wine that niches on quality, spawned the Fairtrade trend, and helps to uplift and empower previously disadvantaged people. Established in Elgin, South Africa, in 1995, the Thandi Project started life as a joint venture partnership between a private farmer - Dr Paul Cluver - a governmental forestry company, and a community of black forestry and farm workers, The Lebanon Community. The project originally focused on fruit farming and forestry, but in 1999 grapes from the Lebanon farm were harvested and Thandi wine was born. Thandi wines were developed and marketed as part of a partnership with the Paul Cluver estate and 'the company of wine people' - one of South Africa's leading wine exporters and producers. With close mentorship from this leading wine industry figure, the Thandi community now exports top class wines to many countries around the world.
