Cape Diversity
Cape Diversity recognizes the cultural and bio-diversity of the Cape. 2010 is the International Year of Biodiversity. The Cape is the smallest and has the most diverse plant kingdom in the world with more than 8550 plant species. Culturally South Africa is also incredibly diverse with 27 recognised 'official' languages! The labels depict the 3 plants species that are the essential trio found in the Cape's natural indigenous vegetation called Fynbos. Ericas, Restios and Proteas. The Erica Patens is a rare Heather that can be found in the mountains above the Cluver vineyards. In January 2010 Dr Paul Cluver Snr was trapped by flames while fighting a forest fire to protect this plant. The Restio Staberoha is a reed with a golden seed head that forms a key part in the fynbos around Stellenbosch. The Protea Serruria or Spiderbush plant is a rare protea that was thought to be extinct but was rediscovered near Malmsbury, 192 years after it was last recorded. Thes

The Cape Diversity range of wines are made by leading South African estates which specialize in the particular variety.

Andries Burger at Paul Cluver Wines in Elgin has made the Sauvignon Blanc and Unoaked Chardonnay. Elgin is a cool climate region, ideally suited to both these varieties. We hope to follow on with a Pinot Noir and Syrah next year.

Danie Steytler Jnr at Kaapzicht in the Bottleray Hills near Stellenbosch, has made the Chenin Blanc and Shiraz. Both made from mature, dry grown vines, on perfect sites for the vines.
