Passionate about New World Wines

iwc wine agent of the year 2009
O Fournier
Bodegas y Vinedos O. Fournier's mission is to become one of the most outstanding, high quality wineries in Argentina and seems to be on track with September 07's Decanter highlighting them as an 'Icon of Tomorrow'. The real stars in the Fournier firmament are Acrux, Alfa Crux and Bcrux, the top of the range wines named after the two main stars in the Southern Cross constellation. Designcrave.com publication selected the Mendoza winery from O. Fournier as the fifth best of “The Ten Architectural Wonders of the Wine World”.

The new winery - a phoenix rising out of the stony arid soil - aims to combine the best of old and new technology when completed: above ground, stainless steel, oak vats and gravity feeds; underground, a cellar designed to hold 2,800 oak barrels at a constant temperature and humidity. The three vineyards in the la Consulta region of Mendoza are planted to classic red varieties, with an emphasis on Tempranillo. Working with a number of local growers, Bodegas Fournier also buy in very good grapes from old vines - a system which actively encourages green harvest and low yields. The winemaker is Jose Spisso, previously from Alta Vista.
The La Consulta region is located in the well-known Uco Valley, approximately 1,200 metres (3,950 ft.) above sea level. At this altitude, there is a significant fluctuation between daytime and night-time temperatures of up to 20-25 degrees C. This variance particularly favours the production of wines with an excellent colour and suitable for long ageing in oak barrels. The region's stony and sandy soils offer excellent drainage during the summer season. The lack of organic material, limited rainfall and prevailing winds are also conductive to high quality, healthy grapes. Furthermore, the water that irrigates the estates comes pure and clean from the snow thawing on the Andes.
