Founded at the turn of the millennium by the Spanish Fournier family (José Manuel Ortega), the winery lies beneath the snow-capped Andes at an altitude of almost 4000 ft above sea level in the beautiful Uco Valley. The new winery – a phoenix rising out of the stony arid soil – combines the best of old and new technology: above ground, stainless steel, oak vats and gravity feeds; underground, a cellar designed to hold 2,800 oak barrels at a constant temperature and humidity.
The three vineyards in the La Consulta region of Mendoza are planted to classic red varieties, with an emphasis on Tempranillo. Working with a number of local growers, Bodegas O. Fournier also buy in high quality grapes from old vines, a system which actively encourages green harvest and low yields. The winemaker is José Spisso, previously from Alta Vista.
The real stars in the Fournier firmament are Acrux, Alfa Crux and Bcrux, the top of the range wines named after the two main stars in the Southern Cross constellation.
