Hollick family at entrance

Coonawarra – in the cool south-east corner of South Australia – is recognised and admired worldwide as a leading area for the production of premium quality wines. Ian Hollick recognised its potential with his first purchase of prime terra rossa land in 1974; now with over 200 acres the property comprises 3 core vineyards: the original Neilson’s Block, Wilgha vineyard and more recently Red Ridge in Wrattonbully. Driven by quality and a hands-on approach, the wines offer exemplary fruit, great balance and consistency of style.

From the early days in winning the coveted Jimmy Watson Trophy for the Best One Year Old Red Wine, Hollick continues to garner awards. To quote only the more recent:

• for their wines: named in Matthew Jukes 100 Best Australian Wines 2011; quoted in James Halliday with plus 90 points; awarded Silver Medals in Decanter World Wine Awards

• for their restaurant: Best Restaurant in a Winery in the 2011 Restaurant & Catering Awards; Head Chef nominated for Country Chef of the Year Awards 2011

• for their people: winner of the Best Business Award in the Influential Women in Business Awards 2010.

Coonawarra is a small township 10km to the north of Penola in the south east of South Australia. The Coonawarra Wine Region is approximately 30km from north to south, and some 2-3km in breadth at its widest point. Originally established by John Riddoch as the Coonawarra Fruit Colony, the modern viticultural region has reached some 4090 hectares in size. The first vines were planted at Coonawarra in 1890 and, with one exception, each year since 1891 has seen wine produced in the region. The modern Coonawarra has 14 wineries handling some 25,000 tonnes of grapes from Coonawarra and additional grapes for surrounding regions. There are currently 21 Cellar Door outlets in Coonawarra. There is a possibility that up to 10 new Cellar Door outlets could open over the next few years. Coonawarra soil is the classic Terra Rossa over limestone, providing excellent drainage and the right balance of nutrients, the ideal medium for vine growth and production of high quality fruit.
Ian Hollick's involvement with viticulture goes way back to his childhood in Mildura as the son of a soldier settler fruit blocker. After studying Agricultural Science at Dookie Agricultural College, Ian worked for Mildara Wines as Coonawarra vineyard foreman, progressing to become manager of Mildara vineyards nationally including the Coonawarra winery. With a vision of a great future for Coonawarra, Ian purchased 22 hectares of prime Terra Rossa land in 1974. The Hollick Winery was established in 1984 and a year later Hollick won the Jimmy Watson Trophy for the best one-year old red wine in the Royal Melbourne Wine Show. Under Ian's guidance, the property expanded to more than 100 hectares following the purchase of the Wilgha property in 1987.
David Norman has brought a wealth of experience to Hollick Wines since taking up the position as winemaker in February 2000.
