One of the most successful wine producing areas in the Southern Hemisphere, Chile made  big inroads on the British market in the last decade as a source of great value wines.  In Chile, now 5th in the league table of wine drunk here, production is mainly centred around the central valley, between the Andes and the coastal mountains, in unpolluted air and from phylloxera free vines.  Most reds are made from blends of Carmenere, Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot –although in Maule (300 km  south of Santiago) where BODEGAS O FOURNIER is based, they use 100 year old Grenache and Cabernet Franc vines to blend with Cabernet and Merlot-. In a climate similar toEurope but with greater diurnal variance due to the latitude.
