International Wine Challenge 2020

The International Wine Challenge has recently announced its second round of awards and points, with a focus on South Africa. We are delighted that two wines received trophies, three were awarded gold medals, and a further seven received silver.

Trophies

Best Stellenbosch White Wine; Best Stellenbosch Chenin Blanc: 2019 Reserve Chenin Blanc, DeMorgenzon – 96 pts

Youthful, bright and tight, with notes of apple, quince, lanolin and wax. Beautiful balance in the sweet yellow plums, pear and ripe apple notes. The palate is restrained but with texture, tangy acidity and a lively personality.

Best Stellenbosch White Blend: 2018 Maestro White, DeMorgenzon – 95 pts

Aromas of fragrant, ripe red apples and herbal spice. Round, textured and balanced, with ripe yellow fruit and soft acidity. Delicious dry style, good to drink now or hold for a year. A tantalising hint of orange and hazelnut on the finish. 

Gold medals

2018 Missionvale Chardonnay, Bouchard Finlayson – 95 pts        

Ripe melon and pineapple – it has a playful lively balanced palate displaying a balance of minerality, cream and fruit cedar, long scented and charming finish

2018 Estate Chardonnay, Paul Cluver – 95 pts

Cedar, cream, lemon scent, subtle perfumed similar on the lively balanced reduced palate. Elegant and fine.

2018 Seven Flags Chardonnay, Paul Cluver – 95 pts          

Delicate citrus on nose – lovely cornucopia with tangerine, apple, cream + cedar. Silky refreshing palate. Discrete and charming.

2017 Reserve Syrah, DeMorgenzon – 95 pts

Spicy cracked pepper, violets, and redcurrants with cedar notes. This is a concentrated rich wine beautifully balanced with a lovely finish. 

Silver medals

2018 Hannibal, Bouchard Finlayson – 92 pts   

Supple with fine black cherry fruit and some wild strawberry and herb notes. Lovely focussed fruit.

2018 Kadette Pinotage, Kanonkop – 90 pts          

Lovely depth and length to this wine, the palate is packed with mulberries, smoky bacon and liquorice with grippy tannins to balance.

2018 Estate Pinot Noir, Paul Cluver – 93 pts         

Cherry, chocolate and gun flint. Intense palate with superb acidity and pleasing new oak. Lively now and will age.

2020 Estate Riesling, Paul Cluver – 93 pts             

Ripe zesty aromas with plenty of ripe and rich citrus fruit flavours on the palate. Really well balanced.

2020 Sauvignon Blanc, Paul Cluver – 90 pts          

Really intense nose of warm apple puree with subtle floral notes. A honeyed, concentrated texture on the palate. A wine that will age well. 

2017 Seven Flags Pinot Noir, Paul Cluver – 91 pts              

Packed with red fruit, silky and well balanced. Fresh, pretty, juicy style and easy to enjoy.

2018 Buzzard Kloof Syrah, Rustenberg – 90 pts  

Liquorice and cloves dominate the core. Full ripe rich fruit on the palate. Long and persistent.
