International Wine Challenge 2021

The IWC announced their medal winners of 2021 earlier today. We are delighted that the following wines have successfully been awarded either a gold or silver medal. A special mention must go to the winemaking team at Paul Cluver, who were awarded the Elgin Chardonnay Trophy for their 2018 Seven Flags Chardonnay.

Gold medals

2019 Crocodile’s Lair Chardonnay, Bouchard Finlayson – 95 pts

Taut and textured; zesty, chalky and mineral, long and fresh, bread and citrus and sandalwood.

2020 Village Chardonnay, Paul Cluver – 95 pts

Vibrant, fresh lemon and green melon. Lemon peel, refreshing acidity, stony minerality with peaches and pineapple, leading to a long, delicate finish.

2018 Seven Flags Chardonnay, Paul Cluver – 95 pts – winner of Elgin Chardonnay Trophy

Good ripe apple notes with earthy sweet spice on the nose. Balanced, fresh and lingering on the palate, with great shape. Poised and very focused with a clean, great finish.

2018 Estate Pinot Noir, Paul Cluver – 95 pts

Chewy, touch of spice. Beguiling whiff of red fruit, supported by perfectly-judged tannin structure and fresh acidity.

2020 Noble Late Harvest Riesling, Paul Cluver – 95 pts

Pale gold. Nose of candied pineapple and fuzzy apricots. Palate complex with quince and apricot flavours. Long and lengthy on the finish.

Silver medals

2019 Tête de Cuvée Pinot Noir, Bouchard Finlayson – 92 pts

Blueberry – bursting fruit; rich mid-palate with excellent use of full vanilla oak. Elegant and long, fresh finish.

2020 Elgin Sauvignon Blanc, Waterford Estate – 92 pts

Refreshing citrus aromas with notes of gooseberry and lemon on the palate. Perky and bright.

2019 Five Soldiers Chardonnay, Rustenberg – 91 pts

Clean citrus fruits, typicity. Subtle wood fruit sweetness, custard and lime, pleasant zesty finish. Aromatic and quaffable.

2020 Walker Bay Sauvignon Blanc, Bouchard Finlayson – 90 pts

Grassy lemon and apple on the nose with a pink grapefruit edge. Light, lifted and elegant.

2019 Galpin Peak Pinot Noir, Bouchard Finlayson – 90 pts

Brooding black forest compote fruit. Complex oak with well-integrated tannins and a firm, velvety finish.

2020 Sauvignon Blanc, Paul Cluver – 90 pts

Fine, citrus fruit, very refreshing. Nice texture with zesty, crisp style. Finishes with blackcurrant leaf.

2017 Cabernet Sauvignon, Waterford Estate – 90 pts

Coconut oak, sweet, stewy fruit. Rich and ripe. Great typicity and lots of good varietal character. Well crafted wine.
