Recent competition results
A number of competition results have been released this month, including the Drinks Business Global Pinot Noir Masters 2020, in which Bouchard Finlayson’s 2018 Galpin Peak Pinot Noir was awarded a Silver medal.
The Sommelier Wine Awards 2020 gave Gold to Bird in Hand’s Nest Egg Chardonnay 2018, with comments from the judges including:
‘This is incredibly rich on the nose, leading to a palate overflowing with flavour and showing really good complexity.’
‘Almond, hazelnut, brown butter and cream notes, with roasted pineapple, burnt orange zest and dried rosemary behind, and the oak is there too. A big wine to serve with roasted fish or white meats with a creamy sauce.’
The estate’s Nest Egg Shiraz 2014 received a Silver medal.
And Decanter magazine featured New Zealand Sauvignon Blancs: 20 under £25, selected by Tina Gellie. The 2018 Barrel Fermented Sauvignon Blanc from Greystone was included, receiving 91 points and the following note:
New to the UK, this is a distinctive and appealing organic Sauvignon that seems more French than Kiwi, with its Loire clones and oak use. Wild yeasts, lees work and malolactic fermentation lend this a rich, creamy nutty profile, given greater complexity and spice tones from barrel fermentation and ageing to join flavours of baked apple, roasted peach and tangy lemon.
