Recent reviews for Kalfu
Kalfu has received a number of mentions and reviews for its wines recently. Tim Atkin’s 2019 Chilean Special Report was published last month in which wines from the estate’s Sumpai range scored highly:
Kalfu Sumpai Sauvignon Blanc 2018 – 93 points
The Atacama Desert is the unlikely source of this pale, saline, refreshing Sauvignon Blanc made without any wood. Zippy, focused and zesty, it has an appealing sea breeze quality and a long, refreshing finish.
Kalfu Sumpai Syrah 2017 – 95 points
One of a handful of brilliant cool climate Syrahs from Chile, Kalfu hails from a terraced vineyard that sits just 6.5 kilometres from the Pacific. Peppery, meaty and refreshing, with clove, raspberry, red cherry fruit, fine-grained tannins and understated oak.
In addition, their Kuda Pinot Noir 2017 was selected last month by the Independent as one of ‘Nine perfect Pinots from anywhere but Burgundy’:
Chile is now also producing excellent pinot, such as the Kalfu Kuda 2017 from the Leyda Valley, which has fragrant, soft red-fruit flavours, some spice and a fresh, crisp finish. Again, ideal with meaty fish, but also white meats, such as grilled pork or chicken or even a rare duck breast and also best served cool.
This same wine also won silver at the recent Drinks Business Pinot Noir Masters 2019.
