Pinot Gris, Stanley Estates
Stanley Estate's Pinot Gris is an aromatic off-dry white from the heart of New Zealand's Marlborough region.
An aromatic dry wine with bright, light yellow and green hues. It has a softly concentrated nose with pear and green apple skin aromas melded harmoniously with complex flint and mineral elements, nuts and a wild barrel-ferment note. Medium bodied, the mouthfeel has good weight and flowing viscosity. A fine phenolic thread and sweet acidity balances the fruit and barrel-ferment richness, and leads to a slender, lingering dry finish with a hint of white pepper spice.

Vintage conditions
The 2017 season will be remembered for being a challenging harvest, due to significant summer rainfall. Fruit cropping levels were about 25% below ‘normal’ fruiting levels, at 5.9t/ha. The weather at harvest was fine for this early variety, the fruit was picked in two parcels as the blocks reached their optimum maturity. A quarter of the grapes were hand harvested by a keen group of pickers, the balance was machine picked at night.
Vinification details
After a gentle pressing cycle, the juice was settled and racked to old French oak barriques, where it enjoyed a natural wild yeast fermentation. Sixty per cent of the wine went through to stainless steel tanks and was inoculated with french yeast to develop lifted fruit flavours and aromas. The wine developed over the next 6 months with occasional bâtonnage.

Vintage conditions
The 2016 season will be remembered for being a slightly early harvest, as a result of a fabulously hot summer. Fruit cropping levels were about average for these clones, and the weather at harvest was fine at the tail of a very hot, dry growing season. Great flavours developed steadily during the ripening period, with the fruit picked in parcels as the blocks reached their optimum maturity. 40% of the grapes were hand harvested by a keen group of pickers from the estate’s seven year old M2 clone of Pinot Gris. The balance was machine picked at night.

This is an aromatic, medium-bodied wine with pear and honey flavours and a slightly spicy, medium-dry finish. The ‘mouth-feel’ is soft from the fruit richness and restrained acidity, and the palate is one of balance.

Vintage conditions
The 2013 was the most near-perfect growing season Stanley Estates have experienced in their ten years in the Awatere Valley, with a great warm and sunny but not too hot summer resulting an early harvest. The fruit cropping levels were about normal for Pinot Gris. The weather at harvest was also favourable, creating a very straightforward harvest season with no undue pressures, meaning that the fruit was left on the vine to be picked at its most optimal times with some great flavour development.
Vinification details
The grapes were machine harvested at night and put straight to press where it was gently squeezed. Then it was racked to stainless steel tanks to settle, before 20% of the wine was transferred to old barriques where it went through a slow, wild yeast fermentation. The balance of the wine was fermented using French yeasts. The wine spent a good time on the lees, stirred periodically to add a real depth of flavour and palate weight to the wine.
