Fiano was selected by Mark Lloyd when looking for a new southern Italian variety to grow in McLaren Vale; Coriole's 2005 vintage was the first Australian Fiano produced.
Tasting note

A rich, complex and full example of this great variety. The vibrant nose keeps you going back for further exploration; nectarine, pear, fresh citrus, shaved fennel and orange blossom. The palate is beautifully balanced with great natural acidity and a soft, creamy texture. The wine shows red apple, tangerine, quince, fresh ginger and white pepper.

Vintage conditions

2021 will be remembered as one of the great vintages in McLaren Vale. The vintage started off well with slightly above average rainfall through the winter and spring of 2020. Once the growing season commenced, vines were healthy and there were mild conditions through spring and summer. The vintage kicked off in mid-February and a well-spaced vintage saw the last fruit picked in mid-April. There were average yields across most white varieties with the resulting wines showing great clarity of aromatics. Fiano is lively and showing the full array of fruit and spice aromatics.

Vinification details

The oldest fiano vineyard turned 19 this year. Some of the crop were machine harvested resulting in more skin to juice contact prior to pressing. 25% of this vintage is barrel fermented in older French hogsheads.

Vintage conditions

A cool spring with windy conditions led to a delay in bud-burst, but the season then saw record temperatures in late December. This was followed by a mild January/February; the start of harvest was 10 days later than 2019. This trend followed throughout the season with the final fruit coming in during mid-April. 2020 whites are showing delicacy in their aromatics, with fresh natural acidity.

Vintage conditions

The 2019 vintage at Coriole experienced dry weather, resulting in one of the smallest vintages ever. Yields were down, particularly with Shiraz and Cabernet, but the wines show impressive depth and balance. Mediterranean varieties showed their potential under these conditions, with Sangiovese vines producing solid yields, great balance, flavour and acidity. Nero d’Avola, Montepulciano and Touriga ripened late, but once again with great balance and flavour, and Fiano is showing concentration of flavour, richness and texture.

Vintage conditions

After solid rainfalls during 2017 and early 2018 the vineyards were in good health heading into the growing season. Early spring was cold which led to late budburst and early predictions were for a late vintage. As the season progressed rainfall reduced and the region had several warm spells which brought on ripening. A warm dry summer led to much lower yields than initially expected, some bunch weights were half what they were in 2017. Picking started in earnest in mid February and proceeded at a leisurely pace throughout March and into early April.

Tasting note

Bright aromas of white peach, pear, passion fruit flower and honeysuckle. A mouthfilling palate of honeydew melon, and ripe citrus, namely mandarin. This release of Fiano is fresh and youthful, textural and mouthwatering.

Vintage conditions

The winter and spring of 2016 was one of the wettest on record which delayed flowering. By early summer we had some periods of good warm weather which encouraged growth but vintage was still looking a month behind 2016 and more in line with an old-fashioned vintage. Rain in January further delayed vintage and had the vineyard team working hard. Thankfully the warm and dry weather returned and the harvest proceeded at a leisurely and relaxed pace allowing a long ripening time for maximum flavour development.

Vinification details

The oldest Fiano vineyard turned 15 this year, and Coriole decided to machine harvest some of the crop in order to get just that little bit more skin to juice contact prior to pressing. 15% of this vintage is barrel fermented in older French hogsheads. Crisp and fresh in its youth, but 6-12 months in bottle will see the texture start to shine.

Tasting note

The nose is lifted and aromatic with pear and summer fruits, while the palate is fresh and clean with characteristic Fiano richness. Honeydew melon and pear round out a long, even finish. It has a generous mouthfilling texture with good weight and layers of flavour.
