Vintage conditions

2021 will be remembered as one of the great vintages in McLaren Vale. The vintage started off well with slightly above average rainfall through the winter and spring of 2020. Once the growing season commenced, the vines were healthy and mild conditions prevailed through spring and summer. Vintage kicked off in mid-February and a well-spaced vintage saw the last fruit picked in mid-April. The “New Australian Collection” varieties including sangiovese, nero and negroamaro were very strong, with vibrant primary fruit and lifted aromatics.

Vinification details

The Nero is sourced from two vineyards on the Coriole estate. One vineyard is handpicked with 30% whole bunches included in the ferment to highlight the aromatic qualities of the variety. The other vineyard is machine harvested and undergoes a more ‘classic’ fermentation. Both parcels are seasoned in mature oak for five months and blended before bottling.

Vintage conditions

A cool spring with windy conditions led to a delay in bud-burst, but the season then saw record temperatures in late December. This was followed by a mild January/February; the start of harvest was tracking 10 days later than 2019. This trend followed throughout the season with the final fruit coming in during mid-April. 2020 reds are displaying bright red-fruited fragrance with great intensity on the palate. The wines have an even tannin structure giving depth and longevity with an elegance of fruit.

Vintage conditions

The winter and spring of 2016 were among the wettest on record which delayed flowering. By early summer some periods of good warm weather encouraged growth but vintage was still looking a month behind 2016 and more in line with an old-fashioned vintage. Several rainfall events in January further delayed vintage and had the Coriole vineyard team working hard. Thankfully the warm and dry weather returned and the harvest proceeded at a leisurely and relaxed pace allowing a long ripening time for maximum flavour development. The wines look outstanding.

Vinification details

Now sourced from three vineyards, two at Coriole and one at the base of the foothills, the Nero vines have really established themselves. The fruit is handpicked and then destemmed. The whole berries are then cold soaked for 4 days before they are brought back to temperature and allowed to ferment naturally. The must is over seeded with yeasts chosen to lift the natural aromatics of the variety. After a brief spell in seasoned oak, the wine is bottled at about 6 months of age.

Vintage conditions

Conditions in the spring of 2015 were very dry, yet there was impressive vine growth, some old hands saying they had never seen the vineyards looking so good! Above average temperatures in October and December led to predictions of a very early, swift vintage. Ripening, however, slowed in January. 60-70 mm rain fell, followed by an unusually cool February average of 19.5°C. Gentle ripening continued and picking was slow paced and orderly. The resulting wines are excellent; colour is vibrant, aromatics are alluring and the natural balance and mouthfeel is superb.
