Shiraz is the traditional grape of McLaren Vale and is Coriole's flagship variety. Coriole Shiraz is 100% estate grown with the majority of vines 50 years old.
Tasting note
The 2022 Estate Shiraz showcases the complexity and depth of Coriole’s 50- year-old vineyards. The nose shows a delicate blend of blackberry, violet, black tea and bergamot matched with a ferrous earthy richness that evokes the estate’s clay and limestone soils. Notes of pepper, black olive and blueberry compliment concentrated dark fruit, plum and cacao. Full bodied, rich and graceful with lush tannins and impeccable balance, this is a great example of the depth and elegance that a cooler growing season can bring to wines from McLaren Vale.
Vintage conditions
At Coriole, the 2022 vintage had similar beginnings to the fantastic 2021 vintage, with healthy rainfall through the preceding winter and early spring. Whilst in La Niña conditions it was a relatively dry November and December with cooler temperatures. There was a resultant yield loss in several varieties due to poor fruit set, affecting quantity but not quality. Continuing into the new year with cooler than average conditions with no extreme heat events, allowing even ripening and delaying harvest until late February.

Vintage conditions
2021 will be sure to be remembered as one of the great vintages in McLaren
Vale. The vintage started off well with slightly above average rainfall through the winter and spring of 2020. Once the growing season commenced, healthy vines, and mild conditions lasted through spring and summer. Vintage kicked off in mid-February and a well-spaced vintage saw the last fruit picked in mid-April. Shiraz had fantastic fruit condition and even ripening made life easy in the winery where each block expressed its identity – bright fruit and juicy flavours, with ripe, full tannin structures and impressive length of flavour

The 2017 Estate Shiraz beautifully demonstrates the mixture of fruitfulness and savoury elements that Coriole's 50-year-old vineyards provide. The nose shows cherry, bitter chocolate and aniseed spice. The palate is bright and full bodied with succulent tannins and great concentration of fruit.
Vintage conditions
The winter and spring of 2016 were among the wettest on record which delayed flowering. By early summer some periods of good warm weather encouraged growth but vintage was still looking a month behind 2016 and more in line with an old-fashioned vintage. Several rainfall events in January further delayed vintage and had the Coriole vineyard team working hard. Thankfully the warm and dry weather returned and the harvest proceeded at a leisurely and relaxed pace allowing a long ripening time for maximum flavour development. The wines look outstanding.

Vintage conditions
Conditions in the spring of 2015 were very dry, yet there was impressive vine growth, some old hands saying they had never seen the vineyards looking so good! Above average temperatures in October and December led to predictions of a very early, swift vintage. Ripening, however, slowed in January; 60-70mm rain fell, followed by an unusually cool February with an average of 19.5°C. Gentle ripening continued and picking was slow paced and orderly.
